BHS ??

What is BHS ? Glad you asked. Here is a scenario:

This is a typical scene: A little child is playing happily, something upsets her, she exhales forcefully with a brief, shrill cry -- but she doesn't take another breath. You wait, but she still doesn't breathe. She looks as if she's crying, but no sound emerges. She begins to turn blue, her face strained, and still she is not breathing. Now she is unconscious, unresponsive, limp; the sight of her lifeless body is terrifying. Now her back arches, and her blue arms and legs begin to jerk uncontrollably. Your heart is pounding, frantic...

This is my granddaughter. Since she was a few months old she has been having "Breath Holding Spells". Until then we have never heard of such a thing.
My daughter brought to the attention of her pediatritian regarding her daughter crying, no noise coming out of her mouth, and passing out. The Dr. in turn, laughed and said..."you're gonna have your hands full"!!!! I could not believe it. No explanation, nothing!!
Thankfully, my sister works for a pediatritian and remembered typing something similar. After reasearching, this is what we found out. BHS or Breath Holding Spells.
What we now know about this we learned off the Internet. Thank the Lord for it.

Up until recently, my granddaugher would cry and pass out, waking up within seconds. (The minute they pass out, they begin breathing again.). It has been becoming more and more intense. Just about everytime she cries, she passes out. A week ago, I came home from work at 6:30 am. and received a call from my daughter asking if I could come and watch the other two children......the paramedics were there, they had to take Lizzie to the hospital....she had a seizure!

After many tests this past week....a CAT Scan, and blood work, and an EEG, come to find out the Scan showed she has a sinus infection and she is anemic. Researching this I know that taking care of the Anemia will lessen the episodes. We are still waiting for results from the EEG. But we are very confident that it is BHS that caused the seizure.
I also forgot to mention, my daughter has since found a different pediatritian, which she loves.

It has been a busy and stressful week. But knowing God is in control.
I am posting some information on here because I believe in being educated. This could happen to anyone. It is very scarey the first couple times it happens, but realizing there is nothing you can do and they out grow it makes it a little easier. The seizure brought the fear back. That was new.
Again, there may be others out there that have experienced this same thing. This is for you.

BREATH-HOLDING SPELLS
Some young children terrify their parents when they stop breathing in response to pain or anger. They start to cry, turn blue, stop breathing, and go limp.
It's understandable that a breath-holding spell is terrifying to a parent who watches their child become limp and lifeless, but it is of no consequence to the child.
A breath-holding spell occurs because of involuntary cessation of breathing which can actually lead to unconsciousness and even seizures because of lack of oxygen in the brain. Despite these troubling symptoms, there are no long term effects of breath-holding spells.
Why would a child stop breathing? Why such a drastic, seemingly dangerous event?
Breath-holding occurs in response to a painful or frustrating stimulus. They are rare before 6 months of age, peak at about age two, and are usually a thing of the past by age 5. They occur with equal frequency in males and females and there is a family history of breath-holding spells in about 25% of cases.
There are actually two types of breath-holding spells. The much more common cyanotic spell starts when a young child, either angry or frustrated, bursts out crying. The cry leads to the involuntary holding of breath during expiration (breathing-out phase). This leads to cyanosis -- the child turns blue -- and may become limp and unresponsive.
Doctors confronted with a frightened parent with this story have two tasks: 1)Make the correct diagnosis, 2) Help the parents manage the spells until the child grows out of this unusual response to the strong emotions that all of us have every day. I am convinced that not a day goes by without each of us experiencing both anger and frustration.
Breath-holding spells must be distinguished from seizures because the latter need treatment while the former do not. In a breath-holding spell there is always a PRECIPITATING FACTOR. The crying and cyanosis always PRECEDE THE UNCONSCIOUSNESS or limpness.
In a severe breath-holding spell the child may have twitching, arching of the back, or even seizure-like movements. In a seizure, cyanosis occurs not at the beginning but after prolonged seizing.
Management is divided into two parts: information for parents and management strategies. Parents are scared out of their wits. It takes good doctoring to explain the sequence of events and the physiology that lead to the spells and to convince the parents BREATH-HOLDING SPELLS ARE BENIGN -- although very frightening. Parents are thinking death, epilepsy, and brain damage but the doctor must teach them to think "benign."
Parents need to know four things about management of breath-holding spells.
Quickly apply a cold cloth to the face. If such an intense stimulus is applied to the face in the first 15 seconds of the breath-holding this may terminate the spell. Usually by the time the parent realizes the child is having a spell, rushes to get the cloth, and gets back to the child's face, the critical window of time has passed. But at least applying the cloth gives the parent something to do. It won't do any harm and it's very hard to stand by and watch when your child isn't breathing.
Put the child on the floor or in the crib to prevent injury from falling during unconsciousness.
DON'T FUSS OVER THE CHILD when the spell is over. The most dangerous possible consequence of breath-holding is behavioral. The child realizes that screaming leads to a spell. The spell causes the parents to give the child lots of attention plus whatever the child wanted in the first place. The child now has a way to get his or her way.
PREVENT the spells. Parents cannot prevent frustration or anger from happening but they can minimize these precipitating emotions in two ways. Allow the toddler maximum autonomy to make choices whenever possible and whenever consequences of these choices are inconsequential. Avoid those frustration-enhancing factors like fatigue and hunger which always make things worse. And set limits that are firm and consistent so the child can practice coping with frustration the same way an older child practices scales on the piano. After a while you get it right.
Think of breath-holding as an extreme kind of tantrumming. Parental attention leads to secondary gain which in turn leads to more episodes in response to frustration. This is one of those times when the best thing a parent can do is nothing.

To new beginnings...

From everyone's blog I read, we all share the same 'vision'. This is just the beginning of good things to come. All this hard work was not for nothing.
My thanks again to Ginny and Jacki for the sacrafices they had to make to be all they had to be.
And to all remaining 12 Campers.....congratulations to a job well done....um...to a job well started!
To those behind the scenes, thank you. I am looking forward to reading more updates as they come along.
Thank you again for the knowledge I have gain being on the outside looking in.

One day to go.....

One day to go..........some may see this as the end of Boot Camp. I rather would like to think of it as just the beginning....
Beginning of friendships that have begun because of the Camp.
Beginning of getting to know new "family" members.
The beginning of beginnings..... because of the friendships I am already wealthy.
Thank you to all who participated in the "fish bowl". You all have taught so much and every one is valuable.
There is so much I would love to share, but I'm finding as I go on, I am getting teary eyed. I am so proud of all of you.
Looking forward to what's to come.....
Joanne
And, Aletha, I meant it when I said my house is open to you for a visit. I will be waiting to hear when you are on the road. lol

Depression

I have had to take a slight detour and research Depression.
I have often wondered if depression is hereditary. I believe it is.
I know my mother battled depression and so have I. And still do, I've been battling it again, off and on since the beginning of winter. Many things trigger it. Christmas, the month of May and October to name a few. They all have some memories that are 'depressing'. I am aware when it is happening.
I see signs in my daughter. I want to help her. I do not believe in putting someone on drugs. I believe there are holistic remedies. This is what I'm researching.
About two yeaers ago, we went to a wonderful natural practitioner. The testing he did, I believe was called 'reflexology'. From this he told me my heart was in shock, ever since my husband died. He put me on supplements. I felt absolutely wonderful. I was so impressed with this man, I told everyone about him. He has helped many people.
My daughter also went to him. She was told she was depressed. After being put on 'supplements', she also felt wonderful.
Now the dr. has retired, and there is no one to take his place. Not in the area we live in.
So this is why I must research.
I will write my story on depression at another time. Right now my concern is my daughter.
This will become another cause in my mall. I can't believe I hadn't thought of it before. Not until it hits home...
I am hoping and praying to still be able to connect with people after the Boot Camp is done. You all have been an inspiration and encouragement to me. Thank you for taking the time and paving the way for us on the outside looking in.
Love you all.

Running out of patience.....

Patience....augh!!!!
I emailed letters last Weds. to two Animal Rescue Groups and have heard nothing. Not sure if they read them or deleted them, I am at a lost as to the next step.
Do I email them again? I am open to any suggestions.
It is sad to report Ed did not make it to the Semi Finals for the Worlds Greatest DJ. ( I wish I knew the ending numbers). As Ed, I know God is in control. He has other plans for my son. It's just hard sometimes not knowing what they are! But we do know that He loves us and wants only good things for us. We just need to trust that He knows whats best for us.
I have to remind myself of this 'truth' often.
What about Boot Camp? It is almost over. I am hoping people will continue to post their blogs. I so enjoy reading them and am greatly encouraged by them.
Well, off to work again.....
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your ways, and He will direct your path.

I sent out two emails to two NPO's. They are Animal rescue groups. I contacted them back in September. Since then there have been changes with MPM. One in which the WCM is free to NPO's!
These two have been waiting on their non-profit to be approved. One has, the other I'm not sure of yet. I'm hoping to talk to them in person or even over the phone would be nice.
I was on a call the other night. I know Jacki said churches are considered non profit and do not have to have the 501 C 3. But what I can't remember is did she say schools also are considered non profit?

Hopefully I will hear something today from one of the animal rescue groups today when I return home from work. That would make my day!
I also want to learn how to post different pictures on my blog. I want to use it to it's full potential, like advertising my Mall. I'm sure I will be able to figure it out, but if anyone has easy to follow directions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Will keep everone posted.

What an Awesome God we have.

I received a message on the phone yesterday from an old friend.
I have not seen this friend in 10 years.
She had no idea I had moved from a house that we lived in for 20 years to another city.
We lost contact with one another.
She had no phone number (I'm not listed) and no idea were I went.
She was on a mission:
She came from China, here for 1 week and was not leaving until she found me!
(She's leaving tomorrow morning).

Well, she did hunt me down and found me! I am so thankful she pursued her mission.
We did connect this morning and talked a long time over the phone.

I just think this is funny because there are times when life gets difficult and I just want to run away and hide. Hide from everything and everybody.
This just goes to show ..... you can run, but you can't hide...

THEY WILL FIND YOU !! Praise God!
